Link baiting is the latest innovation in the world of link building. Unlike other forms of link building, there is very little or no expenditure involved in link baiting and all incoming links to a website are purely voluntary and cannot be penalized by Google or any other search engine. To understand link baiting let us take an example. Let us assume a SEO website has developed a widget that displays the PageRank of a website, and the widget is available free of cost to all webmasters. In the example mentioned above, it might look like the search engine optimization website has nothing to gain by offering a PageRank widget for free, but every single website on which the widget will be used will provide an outgoing link to the search engine optimization website (hence the term link baiting). Apart from widgets, there are other techniques used by webmasters to generate incoming links to a website. The technique employed to carry out link baiting is referred to as a ‘hook’ and there are various hooks used for link baiting. Apart from widget or script based hooks, webmasters can also use content for link baiting. A webmaster can offer the latest news and reviews and have other websites use such news and reviews as references. For example, a search engine optimization website can provide breaking news about developments in SEO and allow other websites to use the content (as long as there is an incoming link to the SEO website). Content based hooks are the most effective means to carry out link building via link baiting. In fact, a recent news article is not the only content based hook that a webmaster can utilize. Any content or article that is well written and meaningful can be used for link baiting. As a matter of fact, webmasters have also started using negative publicity to their advantage by posting thought provoking and controversial topics on their website. There is no denying that such techniques are not very ethical, but the results are undeniable and the number of blog entries and posts that have received incoming links due to controversial topics is on the rise. Apart from content and widgets, another popular method of link baiting is videos. Most websites offer easy to use ‘copy paste’ code that allows other websites to link to videos and other multimedia content. Although the concept of embedding of content has been pioneered by video streaming websites like YouTube, there is no denying that webmasters can greatly enhance their link building campaign by using link baiting via multimedia content. In conclusion, not all link building has to be carried out at the expense of thousands of dollars and link baiting is just one such example. Any webmaster looking to increase his website’s PageRank to above 5, should definitely look into the various link baiting options that are available to him.
