Data Recovery from DVDs

By: James Walsh

Next insert the DVD in the DVD drive. Run the ‘do it yourself’ (DIY) software. Generally, the data recovery software does not alter the contents of the DVD. It will merely scan the contents of the DVD and portray it. If you see the files and folders you were looking for, simply click select and save it. If you are not able to view the files you are looking for try the ‘advanced search’ option. Once you recover the data, remember to transfer it onto a different media immediately. It is not advisable to use the software on the DVD every time, for failed DVDs fail repeatedly.

Retrieving lost data from a damaged DVD is simple, provided you have the right software. Multitudes of DIY software are available on the internet. Identify good software by ensuring it has the following features:

Features of Data Recovery Software

  • The software should be simple to use

  • You should be able to configure the software through the main window

  • The software should be able to recover data from a physically damaged or messed up file structure in the RW discs

  • You should be able to recover music files, images, documents, in short all the lost information using the software

  • It should work with normal DVDs as well as for DVDs that have been formatted for “drag and drop” data storage.

  • It should give you direct access to DVD without bypassing the operating system

Recovering Unnamed Files

Using the software, you should be able to recover even unnamed files. The software should be able to detect these unnamed files and rename them with the correct file type. (Unnamed and unattached files have no extension and, therefore, the file type is unknown.)

Recovering Data from DVDs Used in Cameras

The DIY software you select should be workable on DVDs used in cameras. At times, you might receive an error message while filming on a DVD-R disk (either due to power interruption or some other problem). You should be able to recover data lost thus, using the DVD video option on the software. This would enable the recovery of the files. Upon recovery convert the VBO or VRO files into MPEG ones. Just load these MPEG files into DVD mastering software and create a new DVD with recovered video.

You should also be able to recover and copy movies, pictures or audio files from the damaged device. Usually, when the software analyses the damaged DVD, it shows the damaged parts. It enables you to recover all the data; however, audible clicks are heard in the damaged parts. This feature cannot be avoided when data is recovered from the damaged DVD and copied to the hard disk.

Data Recovery from Blanked DVDs

Even if data has been deleted or erased from a DVD, recovering it is possible. However, retrieval cannot be guaranteed. Recovery of the lost data is dependent upon the type of the DVD and the time taken to blank it. If the data was deleted using a full erase command (in a DVD+RW) the application software will fill up the entire surface with neutral data. The media is not blank. If there is a track with length, the DIY software can get the data back. In such a situation, the search for missing data by the software will yield positive results.

Recovering blanked data from a DVD is dependent upon the type and make and firmware of the writer and upon the version of the erase software. Quick erase on a DVD+RW device presents chances of data recovery using the DIY software. While quick erase of the files in the DVD-RW presents recovery possibility only in the lab. (Erase or blank commands are basically the same.)

Data can be recovered from the damaged DVDs, using the DIY software. If you are not able to locate the files and folders you are looking for, the ultra scan mode in the software proves helpful. However, you must be careful to select the right software. Do not base your decisions on the price of the software.
