The process of drug rehab treatment is different for everyone. There are different levels of addiction, different causes and different treatments that work for different people. One thing starts off the same for those who are physically addicted: detox. Detox, short for detoxification, is the body's process of recreating equilibrium in the body in the absence of chemicals that it has grown dependent on. For severe addiction, it may be necessary to have medical supervision for this process. Once the initial detoxification is complete it may be days, weeks or even months before the body has resumed normal, healthy function. Addiction treatment counseling is one of the most important aspects of rehab. Merely ridding the body of drugs is not nearly enough for several reasons, the foremost of which is that none of the mental or psychological aspects of addiction have been addressed. While it is not unusual for co-occurring disorders to be present, counseling is useful regardless whether or not there are any additional disorders. Substance abuse and addiction can change the reasoning process of an individual, and it is important to learn new patterns of thinking as well as new coping mechanisms for dealing with stress and emotional friction. Being able to devote one's time and energy to the recovery process is essential. The stress of daily life and living can get in the way of doing the intense psychological work that often comes with making this kind of large-scale lifestyle change. The value of a substance abuse treatment center is that it creates a safe haven to do this work as well as providing many valuable resources, both professional and social. For youth, there are a variety of choices, including wilderness programs. When dealing with young adults who are recovering from substance abuse, it is important that they be in a safe, supportive environment that encourages them to get back on the right track. One option after a wilderness or inpatient detox is a sober house. Sober houses are often called halfway houses, and they are exactly that- halfway between being in residential treatment and the outside world. These houses provide a sober living environment while helping young adults return to school, get their GED and look for jobs. It provides a social network of support. In would be reasonable to view this as sober living with a safety net until they are ready and able to live soberly without assistance.
